The World Map shows Link's position relative to the rest of the stuff in the world. There's a Light World Map for when you're in the Light World and a Dark World Map for when you're in the Dark World. In normal gameplay, these are given to you at the start of the game.
Cutting Room Floor
In ALttPR's code, these items are intended to grant the ability to see the Dungeon Prizes of each dungeon in their respective worlds.
