The Citrus Clip is a 1-Frame Clip that allows you to clip through leftward diagonal slopes without any items, even in bunny form.

In Major Glitches and No Logic modes, some common uses of it are:

If you play one of these modes without starting boots, you'll need to do Citrus Clips where you'd more commonly use boots clips.

Select buffering

Some of the inputs that Citrus Clip requires are frame-perfect, so it's commonly done using select buffering.

When the select menu is on screen and you press A, B, X, or Y to close it, you have a moment while the menu disappears to buffer your next input. If the input is a direction that doesn't include "down", you can even hold the direction for as long as you want before closing the menu. With the right timing, you can use this to move for 1-2 frames and then immediately pull up the select menu again. If you press select too early, the benign result is that you don't move at all and the select menu comes back up.

Setting up the clip

The Citrus Clip can be performed at specific locations on slopes that repeat every 8x8 tile. You can recognize these locations because pressing left will momentarily move you directly to the left, instead of up-left. Doing this, and moving left 3 pixels directly into the slope, is the start of the citrus clip setup.

After this, you'll move 5 pixels up-left, 6 pixels left, and then up-left for some distance depending on where you're trying to go.

The following examples show the setup for using the Citrus Clip to enter Ganon's Tower.

Before setting up Citrus
Move 3px directly left into the slope

Learn to recognize the pattern of pixels below your shadow: there should be a 2px vertical line below your shadow, and the bottom row of your shadow should stick out 1px to the right of it.

Move 5 pixels up-left

It's okay if you move multiple pixels between select-buffers. These images will help to recognize which pixel you're on.

Move 6 pixels left

After moving 5 pixels up-left, the next step is to move 6 pixels left.

If you do three separate 1-frame buffers to the left, stopping for at least one frame in between them, each of them will move you 2 pixels, for a total of 6. If one of them is a 2-frame buffer, it'll still work: the 2-frame movement will move you 3 pixels instead of 2, and you can't move 7 pixels left in this position, so you'll still end up 6 pixels left. Moving left without stopping (buffering is okay) for 4 frames will also get you 6 pixels to the left.

The position after moving 6 pixels left

Move up-left

Now, buffer another up-left movement.

At this point you've clipped into a teleport position. If you buffer a down-left movement, you will down-teleport, as described in the example on the vanilla ALttP wiki.

Up-teleports with citrus clips are more rare, but you can do them by moving 5px left in the previous step instead of 6px left.

In this example, the citrus clip to Ganon's Tower is not a teleport, so keep going:

Snapping into the ledge

Uses of the citrus clip besides teleporting require getting to a different position, such as a "full clip" position. To get there, continue buffering up-left movements until one of them suddenly snaps you onto a location that's farther left than expected.

Entering Ganon's Tower

To get into Ganon's Tower with the clip, buffer up-left for one more frame after the snap (2 frames is also okay). You'll move a pixel upward. If you start moving right, you've gone too far.

Then, press down+right simultaneously (select-buffering works for this too, but make sure to close the menu before pressing down so you don't save and quit). This causes you to jump off the ledge and screenwrap. (If you were to press down+right in the snapped position, instead of moving another pixel, you would "yeet" and screenwrap in both the X and Y directions.)

After screenwrapping, you're stuck slightly in the wall of the GT stairs. Tap right to get unstuck, then hold up to enter GT.

Death Mountain Descent

To transition downward from Death Mountain and reach the rest of the Dark World:

  • Citrus clip and then snap into position, as described above.
  • Buffer up-left movements until one of them moves you a little bit up-right.
  • Hold down to jump down the ledge and auto-walk a ways onto the next screen.
